Specific Investigation
Lesson 2
Step 1:
Recap of last lesson:
Revisit brainstorm from previous lesson.
“what were some things that we remember we liked about our ramps?”
Step 2:
After rebuilding our “favorite” ramp, we are going to test different objects and how they move on the ramp!
Students are to test a number of materials and items to see how they roll down their ramp and record how far they go (measure with blocks, floor tiles, tape to mark the spot, etc…)
Teacher will demo the correct way to release objects down a ramp (holding it still at the top and letting it go & how to measure distance)
Step 3:
Reflection/ discussion
What object went the furthest?
What object went the least far?
What objects went the fastest? Slowest?
Which items went down the ramp the easiest? Did any roll off?
Why do we think that is?
Record our new findings on our ramps and rollers brainstorm sheet.
Did anyone notice how some objects rolled (show example of rolling) and some slid? (example of sliding)
Materials:
Books or blocks
Plywood or another surface to use as ramp
Different objects to test down the ramp (see example of rollers and sliders)
Chart paper & marker
Paper for student drawing
Marker or object to mark the distance of the objects
