Let's Move!

Lesson 7

Step 1:

Focus of this class:

  • This class we will be testing our knowledge of ramps in the real world! Can anyone think of a big “ramp” we might see outside? (Hill)

Class goals and expectations:

  • Review what it means to take turns

  • What we will look at:

1)    Sliding down hill- how can we do this? (sled OR slip n slide)

2)    How can we go faster?

3)    Roll down hill (was it faster or slower than sledding)

4)    What happens if there is more weight on the sled? How can we test this?

Step 2:

Putting the plan in motion

  • Students will be able to explore the movement of ramps firsthand through their own bodies.

  • Students will be sledding and rolling down the hill.

  • Students will explore the 4 aspects listed above.

  • To test the weight on the sled: Ms. DeWolfe, the students and an empty sled will race down the hill. We will talk about what this might mean in terms of objects weight/ speed.

Step 3:

  • Throughout the lesson, talk about if our predictions were correct or not.

  • We will review our 4 tasks and talk about what we found when we were sledding. what was the fastest way to get down the hill? Did rolling or sliding make us go in a different direction?

Add to brainstorm chart

Materials:

  • Sled/ snow gear

  • A nearby hill

  • Slip n slide (if warm and no snow)
